Must-Have Teacher Supplies – Construction Paper

All that talk about plastic sheet protectors in the previous post connects to the multiple uses of construction paper.  Keep in mind, construction paper isn’t just for elementary school classrooms.  Regardless of what grade you teach, you will want to have this colorful paper in your classroom.

Of course, construction paper can be used for art projects, decorations, bulletin boards, and signs throughout your classroom, as well as for those makeshift whiteboards mentioned in the previous post.  The whiteboards will be explored further in a moment.

Uses of construction paper beyond just arts and crafts

Sticking with the topic of whiteboards, let's say you split your students into six groups for a review game or a random trivia game.  Each group will be provided with a different color “whiteboard”.  How is this accomplished?  Simply put six pieces of construction paper, each of a different color, each into a plastic sheet protector.  The groups can be named accordingly: red team, orange team, etc., unless the students would like to pick their own team names, as they nearly always do 😊

Construction paper can also be used to color-code binders for you and/or your students.  If you're like me and are obsessed with binders, this color-coding tip will be a gamechanger.

Let's say you want to organize your paperwork, lesson plans, assignments, etc. by class period or by topic using binders.  It makes financial sense to buy binders in bulk, but alas, all of the binders are white.  A binder typically has a clear plastic pocket on the front and on the back.  Dedicate a different color to each period's binder: perhaps period 1 is yellow, period 2 is green, and so on.  Place the appropriately colored construction paper in the clear pockets.

It is also helpful to use a Sharpie pen to write an indication on the construction paper of what is in the binder, such as “English Period 1” or “Vocabulary.”  This quick visual reference will help you instantly select the correct binder.
